Fire crews responded to a fire at an Horry County school Thursday morning, which caused the building to be evacuated.

Horry County Fire Rescue responded to a fire at an education facility 7:53 a.m. on Claridy Road in Conway, according to a Facebook post.

Smoke was detected in a classroom at Waccamaw Elementary School, which is located at 251 Claridy Road, according to Horry County Schools spokesperson Lisa Bourcier by email.

The building was evacuated for precautionary measures, the post said.

The cause of the visible smoke was attributed to a small fire in the HVAC system on the roof. The fire has been extinguished.

There were not reported injuries and those in the building were allowed to return, the post said.

Bourcier said that HCS maintenance is on-site and will continue to investigate the issue. The school has returned to its normal schedule.
