A Grande Dunes resident is suing his HOA and security company after burglars made it through security and shot him during an attempted home invasion, a lawsuit states.

Kelvin King is suing Grande Dunes Master Association, Waccamaw Management and Allied Universal Security for negligence. King lives in the Golf Village neighborhood, which is a gated community within Grande Dunes.

Waccamaw Management declined to comment and Allied Universal Security did not respond to a request to comment before publication.

On April 8, 2024, around 11:30 p.m., a group of three burglars “freely” crossed the Grande Dunes Boulevard bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway without being asked for identification, the lawsuit said. The bridge is gated and has Allied Universal Security officers stationed at the entrance.

The group then went to various homes in the Golf Village neighborhood until they made it to King’s house along Pachino Drive. King heard a noise in his backyard, grabbed his gun and went to check it out, but didn’t find anything, according to a Myrtle Beach Police report.

He then sat down and began dozing off with his gun nearby. He heard his back sliding glass door break and saw a white rock land in his living room. While walking toward the back door, King was shot in the hand so he fired back, the report said. He hit one of the burglars, according to the lawsuit.

King also noticed the front windshield of his car was also damaged.

The lawsuit said the gunshot wound seriously injured King, resulting in his hand and arm becoming permanently disabled. He had to undergo surgeries and continues to deal with pain and discomfort.

One of the burglars was arrested and one is fighting extradition, according to the suit.

King is suing the HOA companies and Allied for negligence, saying the companies failed to hire and supervise competent employees, leading to the burglary. He requests an undefined amount of damages and judgment against the defendants.
