Residents and motorists in the Carolina Forest area probably have seen smoke as Horry County Fire Rescue has been battling a fire near a railroad track.
Crews responded at 4:48 a.m. Tuesday to a large pile of railroad tires on fire in the area of Carolina Forest Boulevard and Hibernia Road, according to a Facebook post.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire, but it continues to smolder, producing spot fires and making smoke visible in the area.
Crews from the Horry County Government Department of Public Works are assisting with heavy equipment, helping to take apart the large pile of creosote-soaked railroad ties. Fire crews are soaking and extinguishing each individual piece of burning wood, the post said.
In addition, the Horry County Fire Rescue Wildfire Team will also deploy portable sprinklers to keep the area wet.
The post said it is a labor-intensive process and people in the area will continue to see lingering smoke.
