An Illinois woman is suing a Myrtle Beach hotel, claiming she was injured after being closed multiple times in an elevator door.

Theresa Carpenter said that she was being given a guided tour of the Hilton Grand Vacations Club Ocean Enclave Hotel at 1515 N. Ocean Blvd. when she was injured by the elevator, the lawsuit said.

When Carpenter entered the elevator, the door closed on her multiple times and she was severely injured, the suit said. The incident happened on Sept. 27, 2023.

She is suing Hilton Grand Vacations Co., TK Elevator Corp. and Ryan Kubale, who was the manager of the Hilton Grand Vacations Club Ocean Enclave hotel.

Swetha Sharma, external communications for Americas for TK Elevator Corp., said by email that “as this matter involves pending litigation, we are unable to provide a comment at this time.”

A representative with Hilton Grand Vacations said by email that it does not comment on ongoing litigation.

Carpenter required medical treatment for her injuries, including a surgical procedure and physical therapy, the suit said.

The suit claims negligence against the elevator company, which was responsible for inspecting, servicing, repairing and maintaining the elevator, and the hotel, which “should have known that the elevator’s door stop mechanism was not functioning correctly,” creating a hazardous condition, the suit said.

There were no warnings posted about the elevator’s condition, the suit said.

The suit, filed Nov. 21, 2024, is seeking a jury trial for damages.
