New winery opened in the Myrtle Beach area. Take a look at the upscale log cabin property
Driving up to Barn View Winery, the sound of the nearby highway disappears as the pine trees clear to a beautiful log cabin-style house.
There’s a large patio littered with various kinds of furniture, fire pits and a fountain feature in the middle. Inside the house, walls and floors are covered in wood and stone, leading to multiple large bars. Dozens of wine glasses hang above the counter and stacks of wine bottles are placed throughout the space.
Barn View is the newest winery to open up in the Myrtle Beach area. Located at 280 Liberty Church Road in Loris, it had a soft opening in late October and has been up and running since, said owner Randy Simmons. He’s operating the winery with his wife, Megan Simmons.
Randy has created his own European-style wine using juice from California, the Finger Lakes in New York and Washington state. The wine is being made near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. The grapes are not grown in South Carolina.
Other wineries in the area, like Duplin and Belle Amie, make sweeter wines using Muscadine grapes. These grapes are easy to grow in the Southeast coastal regions, according to Clemson University.
“We don’t do the sweet wines like Duplin,” Randy said. “They do the sweet, we do the more French-style.”
On the property are two buildings: a barn and a log home. The barn is a beautiful venue, complete with a bar, string lights across the ceiling and a chandelier. There’s plenty of space in the barn to sip wine, but Randy said most people prefer to stay outside.
The house was built around 2000 but has an older feel to it. Walking inside, the scent of leather and wood hangs in the air.
When Randy and Megan bought the property five years ago, he said the house was in bad shape. He’s since redone parts of the house, including the floors which are made out of heart pine.
It’s clear the winery is in a former house with a few bars set up in the kitchen and formal dining room. Randy used to operate an AirBnb on the property and the furniture from that is scattered around the home. The former living room features several tables as well as leather chairs and couches.
When entering the main room, eyes are drawn to the majestic fireplace. The stone fireplace sits tucked into the wooden walls of the home and is complimented by an elegantly decorated Christmas tree.
The bedrooms have been turned into sitting spaces for people to enjoy, with one of the rooms featuring a chess table.
Outside, there’s also a driving range for golf lovers to enjoy. He said it works out well because women are able to enjoy wine while their husbands or boyfriends practice golf.
Randy said he’s felt a lot of love from locals since opening, saying he had over 400 people there on Nov. 16. He’s excited to see the Loris and Myrtle Beach community supporting him, as that’s who he opened the winery for.
“We’re just trying to make it a great place for the community,” Randy said.
The winery is free to enter and offers several kinds of wine created by Randy’s private label, Barn View. Glasses of wine cost $8 to $9, a bottle ranges from $23 to $28 and a wine tasting is $12, he said. It’s open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, there’s live music and a food truck.
