Update: Body found near Walmart in North Myrtle Beach. The man was discovered in woods

A body was found Oct. 11, 2024, in a wooded area near the Walmart in North Myrtle Beach.

An officer at the scene said the person was discovered dead.

Police were in the area, 550 Highway 17 North, about 3 p.m. Yellow tape was put up around a section of the woods near a pond. A dirt path led to the area.

The coroner’s office could be seen removing the person’s body.

According to a North Myrtle Beach Police report, police were called to the area about 2 p.m. after a man discovered the body in a small homeless camp in a wooded area by Dietra Lane. The man then went to Walmart and asked an employee to call 911.

The deceased person appeared to be in decomposition and was lying on the ground. It appeared he had been sitting in a chair prior to his death, according to the report. Police were able to identify the man through items found in a black backpack next to him. He was a 40-year-old white male with a large frame, the report said.

The name of the man has not be released.
