A driver trying to evade police crashed near Loris early Monday morning, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol

The accident happened at 6:34 a.m. on Daisy Road near Tansy Road, according to Lance Cpl. Lena Butler in an email.

The person was driving a 2008 Mercury Sedan and was being chased by police, according to Butler. During the chase, the vehicle went off the side of the road, rolled several times and then struck a tree.

Martin Channing McFeely, 38, of Loris, was the only person in the vehicle and died on the scene from his injuries, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden in an email.

According to an Horry County Police report, an officer saw McFeely’s vehicle with its right rear door open and hazard lights on. The officer approached the vehicle to see if the driver needed any assistance.

As the officer walked up to the vehicle, the driver took off at a high rate of speed, the report said. After chasing the vehicle, it crashed.

South Carolina Highway Patrol responded and is investigating the crash.
