One person died and another was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries following a motorcycle crash near the North Carolina border, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

Hunter Shuman, 21, of Nakina, North Carolina, died when the motorcycle in which he was a passenger on collided with a guardrail, according to Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard. Though he was wearing a helmet, Shuman died at the scene, Willard said in an email release.

The motorcycle was driving south on U.S. 701 near U.S. 701 Business near Loris around 2:18 a.m. on Aug. 16 when it drove off the left side of the road and crashed.

The driver was sent to the hospital via medical helicopter and the passenger died on the scene, Butler said.

Horry County Fire Rescue responded to this incident while the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.

The name of the deceased has not been released.
