A man was run over and killed by his vehicle after it became disabled on Monday in North Myrtle Beach.

Joseph Sapps Jr., 60, of North Myrtle Beach, died from his injuries in the accident, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.

North Myrtle Beach Police and Fire departments responded to Sea Mountain Highway near Spring Street at 12:05 p.m. Monday in reference to a possible fatal collision involving a pedestrian, according to a release sent by North Myrtle Beach spokesperson Officer Pat Wilkinson.

The investigation of the scene and witness statements determined that the man was operating a vehicle when it became disabled. He got out of the vehicle and walked to the front of the car, the release said.

A witness who was walking down the street told police that the man began to push on the vehicle, which was a Cadillac Deville with North Carolina license plates, according to a police report. The witness saw the vehicle begin to move forward and he yelled at the man to move out of the way.

The witness saw the vehicle run over the man and trap him underneath. The witness went to the vehicle and placed it in park and turned it off. He then checked on the victim, who was not moving, according to the report.

Police said that there were hand tools located under the vehicle.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The name of the man has not been released.
