SC Little Pee Dee River goes from drought to flood. What other rivers did Debby impact?

Last month, parts of the Little Pee Dee River had completely dried up due to the drought impacting the area. Now it’s dealing with major flood levels following Tropical Storm Debby.

The Little Pee Dee River in Galivants Ferry has seen some of the worst flooding in Horry County, with levels rising to nearly 13.5 feet Sunday morning. The river is usually less than 8 feet deep. The Waccamaw River has also flooded in the Conway and Longs areas.

The Little Pee Dee River should reach its crest of 13.7 feet within the next couple days and is predicted to stay high for several days, according to The National Weather Service.

The Waccamaw River at Conway was 12 feet high Sunday morning and has been predicted to crest around 14 feet around Aug. 19, according to The National Weather Service. The river is in the moderate flood stage, but could become a major flood.

The Waccamaw River at Longs was over 13.5 feet high on Sunday. Because the river has a higher threshold for floods, it’s in a minor flood stage, according to The National Weather Service. It’s supposed to hit a peak around 14.3 feet on Aug. 14.

It’s unclear when the rivers will begin to fall, but they will remain in flood mode for over a week.

Flooding in Horry County appears to have impacted a small number of communities, including Loris. The Fork Retch Community located along the Little Pee Dee River in Marion County is dealing with a large amount of flooding, according to photos shared on Facebook.
