Update: SC rescue crews recover missing boater’s body from river, coroner releases name

Columbia

Rescue crews have recovered the body of a missing boater in the Waccamaw River.

Members of the Horry County Dive Team found the body of Paul Adkins, 65, during a search Saturday that included marine units from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, Midway Fire Rescue and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, a release from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Department said.

The Pawleys Island boater went missing about 4:30 p.m. Saturday near Hagley Boat Landing in Pawleys Island, according to the Midway Fire Department.

Reports said Adkin had gone out fishing and his boat drifted ashore empty. The SCDNR said on X that it appears Adkin was docking his boat when he fell overboard and did not resurface.

Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway identified Adkin. An autopsy will be performed on Monday to determine his cause of death.

Additional details were unavailable.
