SC church catches fire after lightning strike. Crews battled fire for nearly two hours

A Conway church caught fire after a lightning strike Tuesday evening.

Horry County Fire Rescue responded to a fire at a religious institution building at 6:48 p.m. in the 4000 block of Highway 65 in Conway, according to a Facebook post. The fire destroyed the steeple and there were no reported injuries, the post said.

The location is White Savannah Free Will Baptist Church, 4010 Highway 65.

It took firefighters nearly two hours to contain the fire, according to the post. The fire was under control at 7:50 p.m.

It is unclear if the church will be closed and how much damage was received inside.
