The Little Pee Dee River, located on the northern side of Horry County, has dried up in certain places as a drought worsens across South Carolina.

Residents posted pictures online showing how low the river is, with the river bed visible near Davis Landing. The river is one causality of the drought hitting the area.

The drought has intensified over the last month, said the National Weather Service meteorologist Adam Weiner. The Myrtle Beach area has received three inches less rain than usual over the past month and one inch less than usual over the last two months.

Around 57% of Horry County is in a moderate drought while 42% is in a severe drought, according to the Drought Monitor. The worst part of the drought is inland near Aynor, Galivants Ferry and areas north of Loris. Larger cities, including Conway and Myrtle Beach, are in a moderate drought.

There’s a chance of more widespread rain later in the week, said Weiner, but that doesn’t mean it will fall everywhere.
