A J. Reuben Long Detention Center inmate died while in custody of Horry County, according to sheriff spokesperson Brennan Cavanagh.

The inmate was found unresponsive in their cell around 1 p.m. on Monday. After life-saving measures by medical staff, EMS arrived and took the inmate to Conway Medical Center where they died. Cavanagh said foul play is not suspected.

The person’s name was not released. The inmate apparently died from natural or suicidal causes, and for that reason the identity will not be shared, said Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
