SC Rep. Russell Fry questions alleged busing of ‘migrants’ to Myrtle Beach. What we know
South Carolina Congressman Russell Fry has sent a letter to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security asking for information regarding reports of migrants being “deposited” in Myrtle Beach.
Fry sent the letter to Alejandro Mayorkas on March 27. The letter points to a recent article by The Sun News, which tried to answer questions from residents about whether those who are illegally in the U.S. were being brought by bus to hotels in Myrtle Beach.
A message left for Homeland Security was not immediately returned.
A social media post that had been circulating on residents’ Facebook pages alleged that people living in the country illegally have been bused to Myrtle Beach and are staying in hotels using taxpayer dollars. A photo allegedly showing people exiting the bus was taken on Nov. 28, 2023.
Myrtle Beach City Spokesman Mark Kruea said by email that the information “has no basis in fact.”
Kruea said Wednesday that the city is unaware of such efforts on any organization’s or entity’s behalf.
“A difference likely exists between ‘refugees’ and ‘migrants,’” Kruea said, pointing out that the term “migrants” refers to migrant workers who travel from location to location to harvest seasonal crops. “The City of Myrtle Beach is not a farming community; we have no crops, seasonal or otherwise.”
Fry in the letter accused the President Joe Biden administration of overseeing the “nation’s worst migration crisis in U.S. history” that now has illegal immigrants “making their way into the interior of the United States,” including Myrtle Beach, which is “1,500 miles from our Southern Border.”
Fry is asking that Mayorkas respond to several questions regarding the migrant sightings in the Myrtle Beach area by April 5. Questions include:
- Are migrants being brought to the Myrtle Beach area?
- If so, what is their immigration status?
- What forms of transportation are these migrants using to travel to the area?
- How many have been brought here?
- How long are they staying?
- What amount of taxpayer money is required for housing and vouchers?
