The Horry County Coroner’s Office identified Tyrek Chestnut, of Conway, as the man who died after crashing a vehicle while attempting to elude Horry County police early Saturday morning.

S.C. Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Gary Miller said the wreck involving the 25-year-old happened just before 1:30 a.m. on Old Reaves Ferry Road near Voneer Road, about five miles outside of Conway.

Miller said the driver and sole occupant of a Mercedes-Benz sedan was traveling northbound when they struck a ditch and overturned.

WMBF reported that officers were notified of a stolen vehicle and discovered it along the 3000 block of Old Reaves Ferry Road. When police began to investigate, Chestnut drove away towards Highway 905 before he lost control of the vehicle.

Chestnut had been arrested just a week before on unknown charges, according to online booking records. He was released from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Nov. 7.
