Horry man faces homicide charges in passenger’s death after high-speed chase with police
A Longs man faces homicide charges after leading police on a high-speed chase that resulted in the ejection and death of his passenger when he crashed.
Gary Andre Wilson, 37, was charged Oct. 11 with reckless homicide and failure to stop for a blue light. He was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center where he remained Thursday without bond.
An Horry County Police officer reported that Wilson was driving a Lexus about 6:30 p.m. May 29 when the officer’s radar clocked him traveling 66 mph in a 35 mph zone on Plantation Drive in Longs.
The officer followed the vehicle onto Highway 905 where it failed to stop for a stop sign and the officer activated his blue lights and siren, a report said.
The vehicle turned onto West Bear Grass Road, reaching in excess of 100 mph, the report said. The officer lost sight of the vehicle and was later notified by another officer about the vehicle that had crashed near West Bear Grass and Hemingway roads.
Wilson was still in the vehicle. The passenger had been ejected from the vehicle and was located in the woods some distance from the accident. The passenger died on the scene, the report said.
The name of the passenger was not immediately available from the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
South Carolina Highway Patrol took over the investigation.
