Update: 2 hurt when car crashes through Myrtle Beach post office. One customer went under car
A car crashed through a Myrtle Beach post office Friday as customers and employees were inside.
One person was injured and was transported to the hospital, according to Cpl. Christopher Starling with the Myrtle Beach Police.
That person was waiting in line in the lobby and ended up under the vehicle, according to a police report. Another person also received injuries but said that she would drive herself to receive medical treatment.
The lobby of the post office branch at 67th Avenue closed for the remainder of the day Friday, a staff member said, but reopened Monday with regular lobby hours.
Several customers coming into the post office Monday were unaware that the crash had happened.
Starling said by text that the driver crashed through the front window of the Live Oak post office at 820 67th Ave. N.
The driver stated that she was pulling into a parking space when she thought she hit the brake but instead hit the accelerator, causing the vehicle to go over the curb and into the building, the report said.
Customers were waiting in line at the time of the accident. The vehicle hit those waiting in line as well as structures inside the building.
The outside window was boarded up Monday and signs of the damage could be seen in the lobby. Plastic covered the windows inside.
The United States Postal Service for the South Carolina area issued this statement Monday:
“The Postal Service appreciates its customers. The safety and well-being of both postal customers and employees is of the utmost importance. Regarding facility conditions at the Live Oak Post Office at 820 67th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC, we can confirm that local management has secured the building. In addition, they continue to assess and make necessary repairs to certain parts of the structure damaged during a vehicle accident on September 29. At this time, we will continue to focus on finalizing repairs; however, a date for the completion of repairs has not been determined. We are continuing to operate our retail operations as normal, as it is deemed safe to do so. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate our customers’ patience.”
