Did you see mysterious lights in the sky in the Myrtle Beach area? Here’s what we know
Did you see them? That string of lights in the sky in the Myrtle Beach area Saturday night?
If you did, you’re not alone. And by that, we don’t mean aliens or UFOs.
Only that you would be one of many people who took to social media overnight asking what the mysterious string of lights were.
Turns out they were Starlink Internet satellites that are orbiting the Earth after being launched by SpaceX. The company launched 22 new satellites Aug. 31 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The low-orbit satellites are being used to provide broadband internet across the globe.
Those who live in coastal areas are more likely to see the train of lights, which can be seen for a day or two after they are launched, according to several sites that focus on astronomy and stargazing. Each dot of light is a satellite.
Starting about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, people took to social media asking what the lights were. It’s not the first time they have been spotted here, based on previous postings.
“Anyone see the lights over Myrtle just now?” one person posted in a Facebook group.
“What in the world just flew over my house” another person posted on Facebook.
Reports from the Myrtle Beach area, to Surfside Beach, to Conway popped up on social media.
Many of those who commented immediately referred to Starlink, but others brought up UFOs. The Myrtle Beach area has been known as a hotspot for UFO sightings.
But it appears in this case, UFOs can be ruled out.
