Update: Police arrest man barricaded in home. A Myrtle Beach street was blocked for hours
A large police presence could be seen for hours Thursday at the intersection of Mr. Joe White Avenue and Dunbar Street in Myrtle Beach as police attempted to arrest a barricaded man from a home.
John Hale, assistant chief inspector for the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, said Friday that Elgin Mahamery, 20, was arrested on charges of assault and kidnapping.
U.S. Marshals had warrants for Mahamery and located him in Myrtle Beach, Hale said. When police attempted to serve the warrants Thursday, Mahamery barricaded himself in a home, Hale said. He would not provide any additional details about the situation.
Officials had the street blocked off at the entrance of Dunbar Street, and police vehicles could be seen, as well as officers walking back and forth in the area between the Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and the Boys and Girls Club.
Myrtle Beach Police were assisting in an ongoing investigation, Cpl. Christopher Starling said by text.
Myrtle Beach Police posted on Facebook Thursday evening that officers responded to an incident in the 1000 block of Dunbar Street where “an offender refused to comply with lawful commands and barricaded himself in a residence.”
The post said that the incident had been resolved and all individuals involved are safe.
A person who answered the phone at the Boys and Girls Club Thursday afternoon said they had closed their programs for the day out of caution as the situation was happening just a couple of houses down from the building. The person said the agency would be back open Friday.
Police vehicles were still on the scene at 4:30 p.m. and it appears the man was taken into custody a few hours after that.
In addition to Myrtle Beach Police, Hale said that Horry County Police and Sheriff’s Office assisted.
