Myrtle Beach resort remains closed after Wednesday fire that caused hundreds to evacuate

A Myrtle Beach hotel that caught fire early Wednesday morning remains closed Thursday, causing displaced hotel guests to remain at other locations.

Captain’s Quarters Resort on 9th Avenue on Ocean Boulevard is closed and guests that needed rooms were given rooms at other hotels, Capt. Jon Evans with the Myrtle Beach Fire Department said by text Thursday.

“We were able to get everyone in to their rooms yesterday afternoon to get their things around 3, and then they were given rooms at the other hotels,” Evans said in the text.

It was unclear Thursday how long the hotel would be closed and what would happen to future reservations at the hotel. A phone call to the hotel Thursday went unanswered after being on hold for more than 7 minutes.

Myrtle Beach Fire Department crews remained on the scene for more than 13 hours to help the hundreds of occupants retrieve their belongings and medications from rooms, a Facebook post from the agency said. Each person was escorted by a firefighter “to ensure their safety,” the post said.

Myrtle Beach Fire Department and Horry County Fire Rescue, as well as other agencies, responded to a fire about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at the hotel at 901 S. Ocean Blvd. It appears the fire started on the sixth floor bowling alley, officials said.

Three Myrtle Beach firefighters were treated for dehydration, but no other injuries were reported.

It is unclear how many people were evacuated. Evans said there are about 280 rooms and depending on how many people were in each room, it could be about 1,000 people.

Hotel guests could be seen outside the hotel in their pajamas or without shirts, walking around with the few things they could grab before they were evacuated.

Coast RTA gave up its regular bus routes Wednesday to help transport evacuees, Evans said.
