Salvage efforts of sunken tug boat off shore of North Myrtle Beach to begin Tuesday
Salvage operations of a sunken tug boat off the shore of North Myrtle Beach will begin Tuesday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing through 4 p.m. Aug. 25, a half-mile safety zone will be in effect for all directions around the vessel that is located 2.5 miles offshore, a Facebook post said. No persons or vessels are allowed within the safety zone unless authorized by the Coast Guard.
A crane and barge operated by Resolve Marine has arrived on the scene with the submerged push tug Jacqueline A, the Coast Guard said. An environmental recovery company is also on the scene to monitor the vessel and any discharges.
The 59-foot push tug boat sank Aug. 8 and three crew members were rescued by Horry County Fire Rescue.
The boat is in about 30 feet of water off Crescent Beach and contains 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board, according to the Coast Guard.
The vessel has been marked with buoys, and a light has been installed on the mast to alert maritime traffic, a post said.
