North Myrtle Beach condos’ stairs that collapsed Friday not properly maintained, city says
Building inspectors Monday morning were at the site of a North Myrtle Beach condo rental where stairs collapsed over the weekend, injuring a woman on them.
Inspectors were also at the Sea Cabin Condos on North Ocean Boulevard Friday when the collapse happened, city spokesperson Ryan Fabbri said by text Monday.
Temporary stairs were installed over the weekend, but they are for emergency use only, according to Fabbri. It is expected that a building permit will be issued Monday for the stairs to be repaired or replaced, he said.
North Myrtle Beach Police and Fire Department were called to the condos about 10:13 p.m., according to Police Officer Patrick Wilkinson.
A family, including a 4-year-old and 2-year-old, along with their parents, were walking down the stairs when it collapsed, Wilkinson said. The family was from Apex, North Carolina. The mother was transported to the hospital with injuries.
Officers reported seeing a second-story stairway column broken and hanging onto the first story, Wilkinson said.
According to Fabbri, the condos’ stairs were old and it appears they weren’t properly maintained over the years, resulting in the collapse.
It is unclear how old the building is or the stairs.
The North Myrtle Beach Fire Department is investigating.
