Former Horry County Schools board chairman and former Congressional candidate Ken Richardson is seeking Conway’s top post, saying in a July 12 press release he plans to run for mayor in November.

Richardson, who led the school board from 2018 through 2022, lost to U.S. Rep. Russell Fry, R-7th District, in a primary later in the year.

He was not immediately available for comment July 12.

A graduate of Conway High School and Horry-Georgetown Technical College, Richardson was the long-time owner of a car dealership before selling it in 2009.

Richardson was the first candidate to declare for the 2022 Congressional race, announcing on Feb. 3, 2021 - less than a month after former U.S. Tom Rice voted to impeach President Trump for his hole in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol incursion.

Filing for municipal offices on the ballot in November opens at noon on Aug. 7 and runs through noon on Aug. 21. The election is slated for Nov. 7.

Conway is the state’s 19th largest city, with nearly 27,000 residents.
