North Myrtle Beach officials are responding to a fiery plane crash in the area of Barefoot Resort and Golf on Sunday that killed at least one person.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m., near Dye Course at Barefoot Resort. A city dispatcher told The Sun News on July 2 it remained an “active scene” but did not provide any further details.

North Myrtle Beach police spokesman Patrick Wilkinson said at least one person was killed at the scene, but an exact number was not known. One person was taken to the hospital.

Iris Gaines, in town visiting family, said she was upstairs with her grandson and spotted the plane flying low over a condominium building across from her son’s.

One of its wings was up and it was flying “sort of crazy like,” Gaines said. “It was so close over this condo.”

Wilkinson said the aircraft was fully engulfed when first responders arrived. Pete Dye Drive is expected to stay closed through July 4 as federal investigators arrive.

There were four people aboard the Piper PA-32 aircraft, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Rick Breitenfeldt said in a statement. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading an investigation, he said.

City police chief Dana Crowell was spotted on the scene, and trees appeared to be down in the middle of the road.

Social media posts taken from a nearby boat show a large plume of black smoke rising above a multi-level building.
