Exclusive: Video shows aftermath of camper explosion at Myrtle Beach SC area campground

Katharine Geris was jolted out of her bed Wednesday night after a loud boom shook the Lakewood Family Campground.

About seven trailers away from Geris, one camper was destroyed by an apparent explosion, with damage to two others around 10:35 p.m., according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

Crews responded to the boom within a few minutes, Geris said.

She said she was very impressed with Horry County Fire Rescue’s quick response time and handling of the situation.

“Not only did they take care of the situation, but they were able to calm down about 20 to 30 kids who were freaking out,” Geris said.

One man was injured and taken to the hospital. A dog was also rescued from the scene of the explosion, Geris said.

But one dog ran away — a small Shih Tzu named Lucky that residents are still searching for.

Geris said about 50 to 70 people were out with flashlights Wednesday night looking for Lucky, who ran away after the explosion.

Geris said residents were searching for a way to help each other in the aftermath of the shock.

“It was cathartic to be able to walk and talk to people,” she said. “So there was a bit of healing involved as well as, the community just likes each other.”
