As Horry County crews worked to extract a vehicle from the Intracoastal Waterway on June 12, social media posts started to offer a dramatic look at exactly what happened to shut down a portion of Dick Pond Road and the historic Swing Bridge.

Several people who were traveling in the area around Socastee where the incident occurred turned to Facebook with captured cell phone images showing heavy emergency response presence and visible damage to the bridge.

One person said she saw a car run though the bridge’s gates and into the water.

Authorities said the road would be closed for a period of time, and boat traffic is being limited as well. One user captured shots of the response from aboard a vessel.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Transportation said the bridge sustained damage and would remain closed at least through June 12.
