16-year-old drowning victim tried to help child who was struggling in ocean, coroner says

A 16-year-old boy who drowned Tuesday at Huntington Beach State Park was trying to help another child struggling in the ocean, according to the Georgetown County Coroner’s Office.

Tre’Sean Snow, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was visiting the state park in Murrells Inlet with friends when he noticed another child struggling on a body board, Coroner Chase Ridgeway said in a Facebook post Thursday.

In an attempt to help the other child, Snow was overtaken by the current and subsequently drowned, the coroner said. He was transported to Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Midway Fire Rescue responded to the accident, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

Midway Fire Chief Brent McClellan said Wednesday that rescue crews were called at 3:41 p.m. to the park and EMS began efforts to save Snow.

South Carolina Department of Natural Resources also responded to the accident, but recovery of the teenager had already been made by the time officers arrived and CPR was being administered, according to Greg Lucas with the SCDNR. Because there wasn’t a boat involved, it is not a SCDNR case, Lucas said by text.
