The mother of a man who was killed on New Year’s Day has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against an Horry County bar, the owner and the unidentified person who shot him.

Emanuel Melvin, 22, of Conway, died after a shooting at the G Spot bar near Longs, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office.

Defendants include bar owner Lenora Hemingway Livingston and four other unidentified people whose negligence led to the death of Melvin, the suit says.

The bar owner could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.

The suit claims that the defendants failed to train employees to recognize dangerous conditions, monitor security detail and provide a safe environment for guests the night of the shooting.

Melvin’s mother, Manika Jefferson-Davis, who also represents his estate, filed the suit on March 29.

The suit claims that the person responsible for Melvin’s death was allowed to enter the establishment with a gun.

It is not clear if anyone has been arrested in connection to the shooting.

Horry County Police Department spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov said Wednesday afternoon that she would check into the development of the case.

Melvin died at a local hospital around 4:30 a.m. following the shooting, Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said to reporters in an email. Melvin was shot about 3:15 a.m.

There were also two other people injured in the shooting.

Melvin was found by officers laying on his back near the bar door with gunshot wounds, an incident report states.

He was still breathing, though. Bullet casings and a pool of blood were found at the scene, according to the report.

The bar has allegedly violated nuisance laws in the past, according to police.
