Coastal Carolina University football player arrested for carrying a handgun on campus
A Coastal Carolina University football player was arrested Tuesday for carrying a weapon on campus.
This is at least the third time a CCU football player has been arrested recently.
A quarterback for Coastal Carolina’s football team, Dontrell Jackson, was arrested on drug and weapon charges last week, and another football player was charged with assault in December after he reportedly made unwanted advances toward a woman at a party.
On March 19, Troy Thomas Dela Vega, 20, carried an IWI 9 mm handgun on campus grounds, according to an arrest warrant.
According to the athletics department website, Dela Vega holds the tight-end position as a redshirt freshman.
Both Dela Vega and Jackson have been suspended indefinitely from football-related activities, according to CCU.
The warrant states that Dela Vega admitted to carrying a gun in a recorded interview post Miranda Warning on March 23.
He was charged by Coastal Carolina Police Department with carrying weapons on school property and booked at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center around 10 a.m.
Dela Vega was granted a $2,500 bond, according to the bookings website.
