SC husband and wife opening new casual dining restaurant in former Murrells Inlet deli
Greg Tyler doesn’t sound grumpy while talking on the phone about his new restaurant, The Grumpy Mustache.
The 57-year-old is jovial and laughing when he describes the story behind the restaurant’s name, which centers on his prominent handlebar mustache.
It actually started with his wife, Betty Budd, who likes to find opportunities to jump scare her husband by yelling his name. She turned those moments into TikTok videos, which often shows Tyler’s displeasure at the situation.
Now, the couple is using Tyler’s mustache, along with their combined cooking abilities, to open the new restaurant located at 3140 U.S. 17 Business in Murrells Inlet. The restaurant is set to open March 1.
“We’ve always done food, but never had a restaurant,” Tyler said.
The location, which formerly housed Gershon’s NY Deli, has undergone minor reconstruction, received new paint and a redesign to create a better flow and a “darker, chill vibe,” Tyler said.
The restaurant will offer casual dining, Tyler said.
The husband and wife from Michigan have added favorite Detroit-style dishes to the menu, including fries with chili, cheddar cheese, raw onions and mustard and Grilled Sausage with Kraut. Appetizers including street tacos and cheesy shrimp n’ grits will join sandwiches, burgers, subs and the signature dinner The Slowbird — pulled chicken topped with mushrooms, cheddar cheese, bacon and barbecue sauce.
Most of the food will be made by hand, Tyler said.
He has been working on the dishes, offering samples to neighboring businesses, and plans a soft opening on the Monday before the March 1 reveal for family and friends. A grand opening will be scheduled for later, Tyler said.
And although Tyler’s mustache will be front and center of the restaurant’s theme, he said Budd’s cockatoo, named Vision, also could become part of the decor as visitors might see it hanging out on the patio.
