Two great white sharks were tracked near the Carolina coast Sunday. Here’s where they were
Two great white sharks, Jekyll and Simon, were spotted near the Carolinas over the weekend.
Jekyll was near the coast of Myrtle Beach Sunday morning, according to research group OCEARCH, which tracks sharks. In January, the 395-pound juvenile great white was pinged about 50 miles off the Myrtle Beach coast.
Simon, another juvenile shark, pinged Sunday close to Charleston’s shore, where he’s been popping up in recent months.
“We met both of these sharks in December during Expedition Southbound,” OCEARCH said in a Facebook post. “We are excited to see what these two sharks continue to unveil.”
A “ping” occurs when satellite tags affixed to the animal’s dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water. Tracking data helps researchers demystify life cycles and behavior of the ocean’s greatest predators.
