A 3-year-old Conway boy unintentionally shot himself in the cheek with a handgun Tuesday morning, police said.

Police said an investigation showed that the boy’s father, Jeremy Varieur, 32, had left a loaded handgun in a location where the child was able to access and fire it, causing the injury.

The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. at a home on Second Avenue, said Lt. Selena Small of the Conway Police Department.

Small said the boy did not suffer life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center for treatment and was later released.

Varieur was charged Tuesday with unlawful conduct towards a child.

The boy’s grandmother said she did not witness the shooting, as he was was alone in a room when the gun discharged.
