Affordable housing complex coming to Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach residents will have more affordable housing options beginning next May when a new three-building apartment complex is scheduled to open.
The 48-unit development, on Oak Street just north of the Ted C. Collins Law Enforcement Center, is being constructed after Atlanta-based owners RHA & Affiliated Corp received a grant through the S.C. State Housing Finance and Development Authority to construct affordable housing in Myrtle Beach.
“The city of Myrtle Beach has a need for affordable housing,” said RHA Vice President Heather-Dawn Ashley.
Crews are clearing the 4-acre site and will begin building the three apartment buildings and leasing office next month, said Robert Byington, managing partner with architecture firm Studio 8 design. Developers plan for the apartments to open by May 2016.
Of the 48 units, 36 will be available to those who make 60 percent of the area’s median income and two units will be available to those who make 50 percent of the area’s median income. Another 10 units will be available through the HOME Investment Partnerships Program.
Ashley said 12 units will be for homeless veterans through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program.
The two- and three-bedroom apartments would range from $560 to $775 a month in rent. A two-bedroom apartment is 965 square feet and a three-bedroom apartment is 1,125 square feet.
Ashley said The Gateway Companies management firm will be on site about 90 days before the apartments open for those interested in applying for a place to live.
