A woman will lead North Myrtle Beach’s police department for first time in history
A woman and former police captain has been promoted to lead the North Myrtle Beach Police Department — the first woman police chief in the city’s history.
Dana Crowell received her new title Friday during a swearing-in ceremony at City Hall.
She replaced Chief Tommy Dennis, who has become an associate judge for the city’s municipal court, according to a news release.
Dennis swore Crowell in before removing his badge, which was then pinned on her.
“Dana has such a passion for our people and the people of this city,” a city press release said. “That passion and fire within her drove her to learn and take every ounce of knowledge she possibly could.”
Crowell was chosen for the department’s top job because she can lead officers in the right direction as the city grows, said City Manager Mike Mahaney.
Dennis received a ceremonial ax from Fire Chief Garry Spain, who said it was a tradition to give them to retiring firefighters — Dennis has also been a firefighter.
“Working side by side with Tommy, I learned that he was a godly man, and one of the most kind, caring, selfless and considerate people I have ever met,” Crowell said while introducing Dennis.
Crowell is the eighth person to serve as police chief since 1968.
