The Sheraton Myrtle Beach hotel is facing a personal injury lawsuit after a man claimed he was bitten by bed bugs in his sleep at his hotel room in May.

Charlie Daniel Jr., a resident from Lexington County, sued the convention center hotel on Monday, according to the Horry County Public Index.

The City of Myrtle Beach, which owns the convention center building, is listed as a defendant in the case as well.

The court document states that on May 2, Daniel Jr. was bitten by bed bugs in his room while he slept. The bed bugs were found in the mattress, the carpet and the bedding.

He then notified management about the situation. His stay was from May 2 to 5.

It’s unclear what happened after management was notified of the infestation.

“In the event there is someone that says there is a bed bug issue, then we immediately call the professionals out to come and inspect the room,” Sheraton Myrtle Beach’s general manager Suzanne Hinde said. “If there is a bed bug issue, they immediately professionally treat the room.”

There is not an infestation at the hotel, she added.

Bed bugs can often come into hotel rooms via travelers suitcases, and hotel staff is trained to look out for them, Hinde explained.

The case was filed by Trevor Eddy, a lawyer based in Columbia who specializes in bed bug infestation cases and hotel cases.

Causes of action — the legal claims that allow someone to seek judicial relief, include negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, premises liability, breach of contract, and unfair trade practices.

As a result of the incident, Daniel Jr.’s injuries caused him to incur medical expenses, as well as physical, mental and emotional pain, the filing states.

Eddy, who is representing the plaintiff, did not respond to a request for comment.

The Sheraton Myrtle Beach hotel, a 4 star hotel on Google, is located at 2101 N Oak St.
