Another downtown Myrtle Beach building is being cleared away. Here’s why.
Another downtown Myrtle Beach building will soon be on the receiving end of a bulldozer as the city continues buying properties for redevelopment.
Officials have plans to buy Auto Money Title Loans at 706 N. Kings Highway for $1.4 million, giving its tenants a one-year lease option before taking control of the lot.
The 3,706-square-foot building across from Nance Plaza is located inside a large revitalization zone targeted for large scale improvements over the next decade.
“This is a continuation of our efforts in that area to buy up some of that property and prepare it for its next life as a new and improved, reinvigorated downtown,” assistant city manager Brian Tucker said Dec. 6. “Obviously, the more mass we have in that area, the larger the development plan can be.”
The city has been aggressively snagging parcels for nearly a year, putting almost $30 million worth of funding into the plan to date.
Last year, the city agreed to spend $15 million for a 10-parcel land buy targeting locations that have fallen into disrepair near its Arts and Innovation district: Two commercial properties, seven hotels and a vacant lot.
And three more were snapped up over the summer as part of an aggressive redevelopment plan covering its downtown and arts and innovation districts, approving $1.5 million worth of purchases for parcels along 8th Avenue North and North Kings Highway that will aid in storm water retention and allow for future private sector investment.
The big ticket item is a one-time doughnut shop at 712 N. Kings Highway located in the oceanfront district.
