Wild Water and Wheels is officially closed for good after 32 years of operating in Surfside Beach, its owner announced Wednesday.

Mark Lazarus, of Lazarus Entertainment Group, submitted a rezoning request last month for the water park property, The Sun News previously reported, seeking approval to allow the land to be developed into a mix of residential and commercial properties.

Some Surfside Beach residents recently voiced concerns about the proposed rezoning at a town planning commission meeting, WMBF reported, and a public hearing on the matter is scheduled for Dec. 6.

“I would like to thank all our customers and team members of our company that I have spoken to, worked with and done business with over the years,” Lazarus wrote in a statement posted to the park’s Facebook page. “Wild Water & Wheels could not have been as successful as it was without your support and loyalty.”

Lazarus told The Sun News in October that his company has been in negotiations to sell the park, but no sale has been finalized as of Wednesday, according to county property records.

The conceptual site plan attached to the rezoning request would place commercial space right off Frontage Road and residential space behind it that includes four separate four-story buildings totaling 335 housing units. The proposed timeline would have construction beginning during winter 2023.

Lazarus Entertainment Group also operates Broadway Grand Prix race park and Myrtle Waves water park, and Lazarus previously told The Sun News that some of the slides from the Surfside Beach park could be moved to their Myrtle Beach site.
