Candidate profile: Pam Dawson, Horry County Schools District 6
A school board seat in one of Horry County’s fastest growing areas will have soon have new representation, with a veteran planning commission member squaring off against a district parent.
Pam Dawson, a Republican, and Libertarian candidate Steve Witt are vying for the board’s district six seat that encompasses parts of Carolina Forest, Socastee and St. James. The Sun News asked each to explain why they’re best suited for the job. Witt did not respond to the newspaper’s questions by deadline.
Below are Dawson’s answers.
Why did you decide to run for office?
I currently serve as an appointed volunteer representing District 6 on the Horry County Planning Commission. Previously, I served as an appointed volunteer to the Horry County Parks & Open Space Board.
To meet the needs of our students, teachers, administration, parents and community in our fast-paced growth, our schools must update long range facilities plans, consider land acquisition, develop reasonable funding mechanisms, and create capital expenditure programs that are effective and fiscally conservative. I believe my skills and experience enable me to be an effective board member from day one.
How would Horry County residents benefit from your leadership?
Navigating the often complex and challenging policy-making process demands the development of trusted relationships and transparent communications. I’ve been privileged to hone these skills over my 23-year professional career and public service volunteerism.
Do you believe South Carolina’s elections are conducted fairly?
Gov. (Henry) McMaster and the South Carolina State Legislature work diligently to ensure voters can cast their ballots safely and securely. The scvotes.gov website provides good information, and our Horry County local elections office is readily available to answer questions.
What is your biggest concern with how the school district is currently operated?
I believe transparency to board processes and committee meetings is necessary to inspire confidence in decisions.
What do you believe should be Horry County Schools’ top priority?
We must address growth, build facilities, attract, retain and support our teachers.
Editor’s note: Horry County Schools’ district six comprises parts of Carolina Forest, Socastee and St. James. Dawson’s opponent, Libertarian Steve Witt, did not respond to The Sun News’ questionnaire for this race.
