21 years later, 9/11 impact still reaches far. See who from your hometown lost their life
It has been 21 years since two planes were flown into the twin towers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. Almost 3,000 people were killed between the New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania attacks that day.
According to that list, no one from the Myrtle Beach area died that day. In fact, there is no record of any one from South Carolina dying in the attacks.
Nevertheless, the tragedy’s impact still reaches far and wide, even all these years later.
Myrtle Beach is actually home to a great number of people from New York and New Jersey, which is where most of the people who died in the attacks called home.
WBTW reported in 2020 that New York is the state with the second highest amount of people who moved to the Myrtle Beach area. New Jersey came in fourth on that list.
With so many north-easterners living in our area, infamous 9/11 memories may be prevalent on the minds of many Myrtle Beachers today.
The City of Myrtle Beach website says that there is a 9/11 memorial at Warbird Park off Farrow Parkway.
“The memorial features a steel beam from one of the World Trade Center towers, donated to the Myrtle Beach community by retired New York City firefighters,” the website reads. “The memorial (was) in place in time for the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.”
