A TikTok ad for a Netflix show says Myrtle Beach is a dating ‘red flag.’ Here’s why
A TikTok ad for popular Netflix show “Never have I ever” lists Myrtle Beach as something you never want your significant other’s relatives to know about.
Along with Myrtle Beach, it lists central Arkansas, an etsy store selling Grateful Dead sweatshirts, and Batan Rouge, Louisiana.
“Never Have I Ever” is a coming-of-age comedy that centers around an Indian high school girl as she grapples with the loss of her father.
“I was living in central Arkansas until my parents got divorced. Ruh-Roh! And then my mom moved to Myrtle Beach to run a night club,” said Mr. Kulkarni, a high school English teacher from the show. The TikTok was titled at the beginning, “Red Flags according to your Indian grandmother.”
Why was Myrtle Beach featured in the TikTok?
Some Myrtle Beach videos have been resurfacing online that cast the city in a negative light. The Sun News reported on a TikTok that went viral showcasing one Myrtle Beach hotel with mold in a room a guest was supposed to stay in.
However, Myrtle Beach continues to be a top tourist destination. The city welcomes about 19 million visitors each year, and remains one of the fastest growing counties in the country.
“Everyone’s parents are moving here! We’re the second fastest growing county in the country so between all the families moving here or vacationing here, it’s really no surprise that Myrtle Beach was mentioned,” Karen Riordan, president of the Myrtle Beach area chamber of commerce said. “There’s a reason our beach is so popular, people love it!”
The scene comes from episode 2, season 3. The TikTok got almost 350,000 likes and as of Wednesday.
The show, which debuted in April 2020, announced a fourth and final season mid-August.
