North Myrtle Beach chair and umbrella rentals

The city of 17,000 has drawn attention recently in its ongoing dispute with a family-run business that has continued to set up rental equipment on the beach despite a city law that prevents private companies from doing so.

Cherry Grove Beach Gear has racked up more than $10,000 in fines since late June and has filed a federal lawsuit, claiming the city is running a monopoly.

Private businesses are not allowed to set up rented equipment on the beach under a longstanding city policy. However, they can make deliveries to homes and off-site locations such as parking lots for clients who can then install the gear themselves.

Chair and umbrella rentals can cost between $20 for a day pass and $1,800 for the season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Rentals are available daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from late April to mid-October.

Beach wheelchairs outfitted with balloon tires can be rented at no cost Mondays through Fridays, though reservations are encouraged. Call (843) 280-5684 to reserve one.
