NC man not wearing a helmet, dies from head injuries sustained on Highway 17

A traffic incident on Highway 17 left a man dead on Friday afternoon, said Darris G. Fowler, deputy coroner for Horry County Government.

Michael Williams, 23, from North Carolina, died at the South Strand Emergency Room at 3:52 p.m. from injuries sustained during a crash on Maryport Drive and Highway 17 near the Lakewood Campground.

“The victim died of multiple trauma and head injuries,” Fowler said. “The victim was not wearing a helmet.”

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is the leading agency in this investigation.
