Those looking forward to North Myrtle Beach’s much-anticipated St. Patrick’s Day parade will have to wait another week.

The city announced Thursday its annual parade and festival, originally planned for Saturday, would be postponed until next weekend due to the threat of severe weather this weekend.

The Myrtle Beach area is bracing for heavy rain and thunderstorms, wind gusts of 30-40 mph and a possibility of tornadoes Friday night through Saturday morning.

North Myrtle Beach’s parade and festival will take place March 19 as a result.

“There are just too many unknowns and hazards associated with a weather event like this and it’s always better to err on the side of caution,” City Manager Mike Mahaney said in a city announcement.

The St. Patrick’s Day hoopla routinely draws crowds to North Myrtle Beach’s Main Street, but the past two years have been interrupted by COVID restrictions.
