Horry County Sheriff announces death of longtime deputy who retired recently
A recently-retired Horry County sheriff’s deputy has died, according to the agency.
Deputy Jerry Delpercio worked as a court security officer for 19 years, according a Facebook post from the Horry County Sheriff’s Office.
Delpercio was the designated tour guide at the courthouse because of his “uplifting personality” and enjoyment of interacting with the public.
The Horry County Sheriff’s Office announced Delpercio’s retirement in a Facebook status dated Aug. 6, 2021.
“You could say Jerry was one of a kind,” the Facebook post states. “He touched many lives, and we will miss him dearly.”
He always volunteered to work special events, the department said.
“Anybody who worked in the courthouse knew Jerry and loved him,” Sheriff Phillip Thompson wrote. Delpercio wanted everyone around him to be happy and was “like the Energizer bunny,” Thompson wrote.
Delpercio was a United States Air Force veteran, the post states.
“Jerry was a true patriot” who “faithfully served the citizens of Horry County,” Chief Deputy Tom Fox wrote.
Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson said Delpercio would be missed and offered his condolences to friends and family in a Facebook post.
“He was one of the best guys I’ve known,” Richardson wrote. ”I looked for him every day while he was with the Sheriff’s Office and he’s been by to see me since he retired.”
