Two people were killed in a house fire in Pawleys Island that engulfed two buildings, officials said.

The fire killed a couple in their 70s that lived in the house, which is located on Windy Lane, according to Midway Fire Rescue spokesperson Mark Nugent. In a Facebook-live video posted WPDE-TV, Nugent gave an update after the fire was under control Thursday morning.

“There is an adult couple that did not make it out of the building, unfortunately,” Nugent said in the video.

Nugent said the couple’s daughter, a woman in her 40s, made it out of the house with the family’s dog.

The woman was not injured, Nugent said. One other person who lived at the house was not home at the time of the fire and has been accounted for.

He said the the family were awoken by smoke alarms and they were all together at some point, but got separated.

“They were up and moving around,” he said. “She went out of the structure but the parents did not make it out.”

The fire spread to a second building -- a vacant one-story structure to the left of the house -- which sustained “significant damage,” Nugent said.

The fire investigation will be a joint effort between Midway Fire Rescue, the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Nugent said.
