A recently-promoted battalion chief has died, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

“The Horry County Fire Rescue family is heartbroken this morning, having lost Battalion Chief James Cyganiewicz,” begins a Facebook post from the agency.

“Cyganiewicz was a volunteer with Horry County for several years before becoming a career member in 1993, serving as the HCFR Investigation Unit’s Chief Investigator and most recently earning the title of Battalion Chief,” according to the Facebook post.

The Horry County Fire Rescue website still names Cyganiewicz as the chief investor leading the agency’s fire investigation unit.

Cyganiewicz attended Socastee High School and Horry-Georgetown Technical College, according to his Facebook page.

Horry County Fire Rescue spokesperson Tony Casey did not say how old Cyganiewicz was.
