Florida man hit, killed on road by North Myrtle Beach police officer
The man hit and killed by a North Myrtle Beach police officer while walking on Highway 17 early Saturday morning was from Florida.
The Horry County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Nicholas Shroyer, 39, of Orlando. Shroyer died of his injuries at the scene of the collision after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Highway 17 and 29th Avenue South in Atlantic Beach.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating. The agency said Saturday investigators believe Shroyer was walking illegally in the road.
Pat Dowling, spokesman for the city, said the officer was not at fault.
The crash happened around 2:40 a.m., just south of Atlantic Beach on Highway 17, Master Trooper Brian Lee with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
According to Lee, a 2016 Chevrolet police car was traveling north when it struck Shroyer.
The driver, an officer with the North Myrtle Beach police department, was wearing a seatbelt at the time, and no other injuries were reported.
