Body of second missing boater found in Sampit River, Georgetown County sheriff says

The body of the second boater who went missing Saturday has been found in the Sampit River in Georgetown County.

Kensley “Mickey” Johnson’s body was recovered from the river on Tuesday, said Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver. Johnson was 33.

Johnson and his cousin, 35-year-old Marquis Mickel, left Carroll Campbell Marina about 4 p.m. Saturday in a 13-foot jon boat, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office. Mickel’s body was recovered from the river Monday afternoon. Both bodies were found near the marina.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson requested autopsies for both bodies.

The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office marine patrol units, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources began the search for the two men Sunday.

Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver said Monday that the search had been narrowed down to an “area of interest.”

The section of the Sampit River was roped off and closed to boat traffic for divers from the department of natural resources to continue searching for the missing boaters.
