Fire engulfs Georgetown store as storm moves through the area

Crews worked to extinguish a fire at a store on Fraser Street in Georgetown.

Firefighters responded to North Fraser Street and Jessamine Avenue Thursday night for the blaze. Flames were coming from the building, according to Midway Fire Rescue. A second-alarm was called to add extra manpower at the scene.

People were asked to avoid the area as crews worked.

The fire happened as the remnants of Hurricane Sally moved through the Grand Strand. There is no word on how the blaze started.

Sabrina Billings lives near the fire and said it was at a variety store that sells various items. She said her son was leaving home and noticed gray smoke coming from the building.

Billings was on the way home when the fire started and saw firetrucks turning down her road, which she said was a “very scary” situation.
